Clare County Council begins process for Kilbaha Pier road takeover

The West Clare Municipal District has initiated the process to have the road leading from the R487 to Kilbaha Pier taken in charge by the Clare County Council. The proposal, supported by local councillors, aims to improve access for residents and visitors traveling to nearby amenities. The statutory process under the Roads Act 1993 will include public consultation, an engineer’s report, and a final decision following post-consultation procedures.

Separately, residents in West Clare are petitioning for a footpath and traffic calming measures at Leadmore to address dangerous speeding on the approach to Kilrush. While local representatives have called for a footpath with public lighting, council officials noted significant obstacles. Because the proposed route lies along the N67, which has a 100 km/h speed limit, the project requires approval from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). Engineering officials indicated that the project may be inconsistent with national planning policy for National Secondary Roads, making TII approval unlikely.
