Clarence Thomas rejects racial political mandates in interview

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas addressed social and political pressures regarding racial identity and political affiliation during an interview on the ‘Verdict with Ted Cruz’ podcast. Thomas rejected the notion that Black Americans are expected to hold specific political views based on their race, describing such expectations as a “deterministic view.”

Thomas referred to himself as a “walking contradiction” to critics who suggest his conservative stances deviate from what is expected of Black citizens. He criticized those who attempt to mandate specific ways of thinking based on skin color, stating, “You confuse me with someone who’s been in indentured servitude or something.”

The interview was part of a discussion surrounding the release of a book by Senator Ted Cruz regarding the justice. During the conversation, Thomas expressed gratitude toward Cruz and Senator Mike Lee for their support during previous controversies involving his wife and various gifts received from wealthy individuals.
