U.S. regulators signal push for cryptocurrency legal clarity

U.S. regulators and officials are signaling a shift toward providing greater legal clarity for the cryptocurrency industry. At a White House crypto summit, officials expressed a desire to keep digital asset innovation within the United States by creating a more predictable regulatory environment.

CFTC Chairman Michael Selig stated that the era of regulation through enforcement and political pressure is ending, suggesting that innovators are now being welcomed by the administration. Similarly, SEC Chairman Paul Atkins noted that a recently proposed rule regarding crypto assets aims to provide the legal certainty necessary for digital asset companies to raise capital in the U.S.

On the legislative front, the Clarity Act faces a critical test in the Senate on September 15. A vote requiring 60 votes is needed to move the bill forward. Ripple’s legal director, Stuart Alderoty, warned that failure to pass such a framework could cause the crypto economy and related investments to move offshore.
