CLASCO project develops laser processes for 3D-printed metal components

Researchers under the Horizon Europe CLASCO project have developed a new method for post-processing complex 3D-printed metal components. Coordinated by TU Dresden, the initiative integrates laser polishing, microstructuring, process monitoring, digital twins, and artificial intelligence into a unified manufacturing chain.

Because 3D-printed metal parts often possess high surface roughness, the project utilizes a two-step laser process. First, laser polishing smooths the surface without physical contact. Second, Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP) creates precise microstructures in specific areas to tailor surface properties. These technologies have been validated for use in the medical and aerospace sectors, including commercial aviation and space applications.
