Classic car maintenance and winter tire safety updates
The Gesellschaft für Technische Überwachung (GTÜ) has provided guidance for classic car owners regarding winter maintenance. While regular driving can prevent technical issues by bringing oil and water to normal operating temperatures and preventing tires from sitting in one position, road salt presents a significant risk of corrosion. Owners are advised to check corrosion protection and thoroughly clean the underbody and wheel arches after driving on salted roads.
Separately, an ADAC test of 32 winter tire models revealed significant quality disparities. Fifteen of the tested models were deemed not recommended, with nine receiving a 'deficient' rating. The test highlighted issues with durability and safety, particularly in small car tires that may perform well on snow but become a risk on dry roads. Significant differences were also noted in braking distances on wet surfaces.
