Classic rock artists face allegations of song plagiarism
The classic rock genre features several notable instances of alleged song plagiarism and songwriting controversies. Bob Dylan has faced claims regarding tracks such as ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ and ‘When the Deal Goes Down,’ the latter of which reportedly utilized a Civil War-era poem and a melody from a Bing Crosby song.
Rod Stewart has also dealt with publishing credit disputes, specifically regarding his 1988 hit ‘Forever Young’ due to its similarities to a 1973 Dylan song. Stewart reportedly donated his portion of the publishing credit to charity.
Other major artists identified in discussions of musical imitation include The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Doors, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, and Steely Dan. Deep Purple’s ‘Child in Time’ is noted as one of the significant examples in these discussions.
