Classical music performances feature Mahler Academy Orchestra and Frankfurt Radio Brass

Recent classical music performances highlight diverse orchestral and brass traditions. At the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Mahler Academy Orchestra, conducted by Philipp von Steinaecker, performed works by Gustav Mahler. The program included ‘Kindertotenlieder’ featuring mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron, followed by Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. The orchestra participates in a project to recreate the specific instrumental sounds used by the Vienna Philharmonic during Mahler’s era.

In Germany, five brass players from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony presented a chamber music program titled ‘Blechpartie’. The repertoire spanned various styles and eras, beginning with a brass arrangement of J.S. Bach’s ‘Toccata and Fugue in D Minor’ by Fred Mills. The performance also featured works by Kurt Schwertsik, Kerry Turner, and Enrique Crespo, incorporating elements of American brass culture and folkloric rhythms from the ‘New World’ through Crespo’s ‘Suite Americana No. 1’.
