ClassNK launches Survey Compass AI assistant for maritime surveys

ClassNK has launched ‘Survey Compass,’ an AI assistant designed to support shipowners and ship management companies with classification survey-related operations. The tool allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive concise summaries alongside links to the original source documents.

To ensure accuracy and reliability in maritime safety, the assistant utilizes a retrieval-based approach. This method generates answers based on specific relevant documents to reduce the risk of AI-generated inaccuracies, allowing professionals to review the underlying references directly.

The initial release covers the Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships (Part B), Guidance for Undergoing Surveys, and Technical Information. The service is accessible via the ‘ClassNK Customer Hub – Ship in Service –’ web portal. This launch is part of ClassNK’s broader strategy to develop a digital service platform for ships in service.
