Claude Code preferred by 75% of developers over OpenAI Codex

A survey of over 100 developers indicates a strong preference for Claude Code over OpenAI Codex, with approximately 75% of respondents favoring the former. While 22% of participants use both tools, Claude Code maintains roughly twice as many adherents as Codex.

Developers cited several key advantages for Claude Code, including its ability to manage large, complex codebases and maintain consistency across multiple files. The tool is also praised for its agentic capabilities within the terminal, allowing it to plan and reason through changes rather than acting as a simple autocomplete function. This planning ability reportedly reduces the need for corrections during complex refactoring.

Conversely, Codex remains relevant for some users due to its efficiency and budget management. However, Claude Code is increasingly viewed as a natural fit for existing professional workflows due to its integration capabilities and superior code quality in complex scenarios.
