Claude Code usage limits drive demand for context management
Developers using Anthropic’s Claude Code are facing challenges regarding usage limits and token consumption. Reports indicate that long-running sessions significantly increase costs and lead to hitting usage quotas much faster than expected. In some instances, users reported quotas running out in as little as 19 minutes rather than the anticipated five hours.
Technical analysis suggests that the primary cause is the accumulation of large contexts. Because Claude Code sends the entire conversation history with every request, sessions that grow to include millions of tokens consume limits rapidly. Anthropic has acknowledged these issues, citing tighter peak-hour limits and growing session sizes as contributing factors.
To mitigate these issues, developers are implementing manual and automated management strategies. These include using hooks to notify users when context exceeds certain thresholds, utilizing the /clear command to start fresh sessions when switching tasks, and implementing custom scripts to save session logs before clearing context to maintain continuity without the token overhead.
