Monet’s ‘Iris’ sells for record €50 million at Paris auction

Claude Monet’s monumental painting, ‘Iris’ (1924–1925), sold for €50 million at a Sotheby’s auction in Paris on October 22, setting a new record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction in France. The sale price significantly exceeded the initial estimate of €22 million to €30 million.

The large-scale canvas, measuring 1.60 meters high and 1.80 meters wide, had never been publicly exhibited and was previously known only through a black-and-white photograph. It had remained in the private Paris residence of the Schlumberger family for decades after being acquired by collector Jeanne Schlumberger.

The auction featured several other works from the Schlumberger collection, including Monet’s ‘Saule Pleureur’, which fetched €9.6 million. In a separate auction by Christie’s, other Monet works were sold, including ‘Bord des falaises à Pourville’ for €12.7 million. Additionally, three Paul Cézanne paintings were withdrawn from the sale shortly before it began to facilitate their acquisition by the city of Aix-en-Provence as national treasures.
