Claudia Sheinbaum accuses Amnesty International of political co-option

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has accused Amnesty International of being co-opted by individuals opposed to her administration. The accusation follows the organization's support for a United Nations Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) procedure regarding Mexico's disappearance crisis.

Amnesty International has highlighted that Mexico faces a crisis involving more than 132,000 missing persons, citing deficiencies in search efforts and forensic identification. The organization has urged the Mexican government to accept technical and financial assistance stemming from the UN committee's intervention to strengthen institutional capacities.

President Sheinbaum defended the government's rejection of the committee's observations, labeling them a biased interpretation of the issue. She argued that while forced disappearances by state agents occurred during the historical “Dirty War” period, the current phenomenon is primarily driven by organized crime.
