OAS approves urgent foreign ministers meeting over Nicaragua crisis FAST-MOVING
The Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Council has approved a resolution to convene an urgent meeting of foreign ministers in Washington, D.C., to address the political crisis and institutional deterioration in Nicaragua. The resolution, spearheaded by the United States, passed with 29 votes in favor, one against from Brazil, and one abstention from Mexico. The meeting aims to evaluate potential actions regarding the Nicaraguan government's plans to eliminate competitive elections and implement constitutional reforms that would extend presidential terms and bar opposition figures from participating in future polls.
The resolution invokes Articles 61, 62, and 63 of the OAS Charter, which are typically reserved for serious emergencies requiring collective regional responses. The decision follows years of tension, including Nicaragua's withdrawal from the organization in 2023. While the meeting's date has not yet been set, the move represents a significant escalation in diplomatic pressure against the administration of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
In response to the OAS decision, Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo criticized international pressure, labeling opponents and critics as 'mercenaries' and 'traitors.' She maintained that the country is undergoing sovereign electoral reforms intended to ensure free and dignified elections.
