Claudia Sheinbaum addresses delays in Mexico's national DNA bank

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has acknowledged significant delays at the state level regarding the creation and operation of a national DNA bank intended to identify missing persons. During a press conference, Sheinbaum noted that while legislation mandates the establishment of genetic information banks, the primary bottleneck is not the collection of samples from relatives, but the subsequent analysis and processing of that genetic data.

To address these delays, the federal government aims to increase resources for state entities and the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR). The strategy involves coordinated efforts between the FGR, the National Search Commission, and state-level search commissions to accelerate identity processes. Sheinbaum emphasized that forensic science is a critical component of a ten-point plan to combat disappearances, particularly in cases where traditional identification methods, such as fingerprints or dental records, are unavailable.
