Claudia Sheinbaum seeks meeting with Xi Jinping at APEC summit

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed interest in holding a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during her upcoming visit to China in November. Sheinbaum will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, noting that Mexico is scheduled to host the forum in 2028, making participation in preparatory meetings standard practice.

Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of maintaining stable relations with both China and the United States. While noting ‘good relations’ with Beijing, she distinguished the two partnerships by highlighting that Mexico holds a free trade agreement with the U.S. but lacks a similar formal agreement with China.

Regarding U.S. relations, the Mexican government is pursuing a strategy to increase imports from the United States to help reduce the U.S. trade deficit, a key demand in ongoing negotiations related to the USMCA (T-MEC) review. Additionally, Sheinbaum commented on the economic competition between the U.S. and China, stating that such rivalry should not lead to global instability but should instead promote cooperation for development.
