Claudia Sheinbaum addresses Vulcan Materials litigation and Cancún development

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed ongoing litigation with Vulcan Materials regarding limestone extraction in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo. A court recently ordered a compensation of between 15 and 17 million dollars—approximately 1% of the amount originally sought by the company—for damages caused by the extraction. Sheinbaum noted that Vulcan Materials may appeal the decision and stated that the government is prioritizing environmental remediation over the company's request to remove material.

Separately, Sheinbaum addressed the proposed financial and technological district in Cancún, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama. The President clarified that the location for this project has not been approved and emphasized that development cannot occur in jungle areas due to conservation needs.

This stance has caused concern among the Quintana Roo business sector. Miguel Ángel Lemus, president of the Association of Real Estate Developers of Quintana Roo (Adiqroo), warned that the federal government's position creates legal uncertainty, potentially jeopardizing advanced investment negotiations in the hospital and technology sectors.
