Rubén Rocha Moya requests indefinite leave from Sinaloa governorship

Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya has requested an indefinite leave of absence from his position, following a brief and controversial return to office that lasted only 34 hours. The Sinaloa State Congress unanimously approved the request during an extraordinary session.

Rocha Moya's return to office on August 21 was met with significant criticism from President Claudia Sheinbaum, who described the move as “imprudent” given that the governor is currently under investigation by the Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR). These investigations follow allegations from U.S. authorities regarding potential links to organized crime, specifically a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The political fallout has been extensive, causing friction within the ruling Morena party. While President Sheinbaum emphasized that the decision to return and subsequently step down was a personal matter and not an intervention by the federal government, she stressed that the incoming interim governor must possess honesty and professionalism. Opposition parties, including PAN and PRI, have called for the disappearance of local powers and have criticized the current administration's handling of security in the state. The Sinaloa State Congress is now tasked with selecting an interim governor to serve until the end of the current term in 2027.
