Mexico protests U.S. deportations of citizens to Central America

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has formally protested the United States' practice of deporting Mexican citizens to third countries in Central America rather than repatriating them directly to Mexico. The National Institute of Migration (INM) reported that over 2,900 Mexicans have been sent to Guatemala and Honduras, and 20 to Costa Rica. Sheinbaum stated there is “no reason” for these transfers and emphasized that Mexico is pursuing separate negotiations with Washington regarding trade, security, and migration.

In Honduras, President Nasry Asfura has requested that the U.S. allow approximately 55,000 Hondurans affected by the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) additional time to prepare for their eventual return. Asfura noted that many of these individuals have lived in the U.S. for decades and requested an orderly transition to manage family and economic affairs.

Simultaneously, U.S. immigration enforcement has reached record levels, with ICE reporting over 50,000 arrests in August 2026. This surge coincides with a shift in deportation logistics, where a significant percentage of deportees are being flown to southern Mexican states like Chiapas and Tabasco rather than being returned via northern land borders.
