Claudia Sheinbaum discloses Banxico officials' pensions

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has publicly disclosed the pension amounts received by former officials of the Banco de México (Banxico). She criticized the fairness of these payments in relation to their years of service.

Sheinbaum stated that former President Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León receives an annual pension of approximately 1.79 million pesos, despite having worked only nine years at the central bank. Additionally, she noted that former Banxico Governor Guillermo Ortiz Martínez receives roughly 300,000 pesos per month after 11 years of service at the institution.

The President's comments follow assertions by Zedillo and Ortiz that their pensions are “justo” (fair). Sheinbaum countered that typical workers require many more years of service to achieve retirement. While she noted that the federal government does not intend to intervene in Banxico pensions, she emphasized the importance of public transparency regarding these figures.

In contrast, Sheinbaum mentioned that former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador receives a monthly pension of less than 30,000 pesos through ISSSTE. She estimated her own future pension will be approximately 35,000 pesos per month, based on her long-standing contributions to the system.
