Mexico to mandate removal of violent digital content following Torreón school attack

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced the formation of an inter-institutional working group to draft a presidential decree targeting violent content on digital platforms. The initiative aims to mandate that social media companies detect, report, and promptly remove content that incites violence, abuse, or harassment.

The move follows a violent attack at a secondary school in Torreón, Coahuila, where two 18-year-old former students armed with knives killed an assistant principal and injured four others. Investigations suggest the suspects may have been influenced by violent content found online.

The working group will be coordinated by the Federal Executive Legal Counsel and include the Secretariats of Security and Public Education, the National Intelligence Center, and the Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications, alongside academic experts.

In addition to platform regulation, the government plans to strengthen the 'ABC de las emociones' program, implement confidential reporting boxes in schools, and pursue reforms to regulate social media access for minors to protect them from harmful content.
