Claudia Sheinbaum orders remote work and school closures in Mexico City for World Cup match

President Claudia Sheinbaum signed a decree, published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación, that mandates teleworking for federal employees and suspends in‑person classes in Mexico City on 30 June 2026. The measures are aimed at easing traffic, enhancing safety and ensuring continuity of essential public services as the Mexican national soccer team plays its round‑of‑16 match at the Estadio Azteca.

The decree does not create a national holiday, but thousands of federal workers will work from home and all schools in the capital will close for the day. Authorities anticipate a massive influx of spectators for the match, which is the first World Cup knockout game held in Mexico since the tournament’s co‑hosting by Mexico, the United States and Canada. The Azteca stadium, a historic venue that previously hosted two World Cup finals, will host the game, prompting the city’s extensive mobility and security preparations.
