Claudia Sheinbaum orders review of university and Banxico pensions

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced plans to review pension systems across several sectors to address what she describes as excessive retirement schemes.

First, the federal government is examining the pension systems of state public universities. These costs currently represent an average of 40 percent of institutional payrolls. The administration has identified irregularities, including individuals receiving double pensions or benefits without having made the necessary contributions. The review will involve dialogue with university authorities, academics, and unions to ensure financial sustainability without violating workers' rights.

Additionally, Sheinbaum has called for a review of the lifetime pensions granted to former high-ranking officials at the Banco de México (Banxico). She noted that some former governors and sub-governors receive monthly payments as high as 400,000 pesos, which exceeds the President's own salary. While Banxico was excluded from previous legislative reforms limiting ‘golden pensions’ due to its autonomy, Sheinbaum argued that the institution should still review these amounts for moral and fiscal reasons.
