Trump praises Sheinbaum on drug combat but urges more security investment
U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an annual determination regarding major drug transit and production countries, in which he praised Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for her administration's efforts in combating drug trafficking. Trump specifically noted increased drug seizures, the dismantling of clandestine laboratories, and enhanced security cooperation, which contributed to the neutralization of high-profile cartel leaders such as Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”.
Despite this recognition, Trump emphasized that Mexico must take more decisive action against “narco-terrorist” organizations. He argued that current Mexican investments in security forces are insufficient to combat criminal networks and their finances. He urged Mexico to increase customs inspections, foster greater private sector involvement in supply chain integrity, and focus on exposing and prosecuting corrupt public officials who facilitate cartel activities.
In response, President Sheinbaum rejected claims of potential foreign intervention in Mexico, characterizing certain reports as unsubstantiated attempts to influence the upcoming U.S. elections. She asserted that Mexico's relationship with the United States must be based on coordination without subordination. She cited polling data suggesting that 91 percent of Mexicans oppose foreign intervention in their internal affairs.
Separately, the Mexican Senate unanimously approved a request to allow 139 U.S. military personnel from the 101st Airborne Division to enter Mexico for a joint specialized exercise in Chihuahua scheduled for late September.
