Claudia Sheinbaum responds to Trump's claims on Mexican security

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to criticisms from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding security in Mexico by presenting data on homicide rates. This follows Trump’s assertion that drug cartels control Mexico and his claim that Mexican authorities lack the capacity to confront these organizations. Trump also indicated that the United States would intensify its own operations against drug trafficking.

During a press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum defended her administration's security strategy by comparing daily homicide averages across different presidential terms. She stated that the current daily average of intentional homicides is 47.1, which she described as “practically half” of the 91.7 recorded during the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She further noted that the rate was 100 daily at the end of Enrique Peña Nieto’s term.

While presenting these figures to demonstrate progress, Sheinbaum acknowledged that security challenges remain. She stated, “That everything is resolved, no, we have never said that everything is resolved. We have always said that we work every day for the well-being and security of the people.”
