Claudio Lottenberg considered for Ministry of Health under Flávio Bolsonaro

Claudio Lottenberg, an ophthalmologist and former municipal health secretary in São Paulo, has emerged as a potential candidate to lead the Ministry of Health in a future government led by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Lottenberg, who previously served as president of the Deliberative Council at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, has stepped down from that role to maintain political neutrality.

Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic under Jair Bolsonaro, Lottenberg described the period as a ‘superado’ (overcome) chapter, noting that decision-makers did not always have the best tools available at the time. He emphasized that his management would be technical and strictly based on scientific evidence, even if such a stance conflicts with anti-vaccine sentiments within Bolsonaro's political base.

His potential appointment is viewed by allies as a strategic move to shield Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign from criticisms regarding scientific denialism. Lottenberg’s proposed vision for health includes utilizing digital technologies to improve primary care, optimizing the use of clinical data, and ensuring efficient budget management to bring services closer to patients.
