Claudio Ronci appointed head of Mammagialla prison police
Claudio Ronci has assumed command of the prison police at the Mammagialla penitentiary in Viterbo. A 49-year-old law graduate with experience leading agents at Rebibbia and serving in Foggia, Parma, and Paliano, Ronci takes over during a period of significant institutional challenges.
The Nicandro Izzo facility is currently facing severe overcrowding, with occupancy rates reported at 164% as of late September. Additionally, the prison is dealing with staffing shortages, with reports indicating only 272 agents on duty compared to the 350 required.
Other critical issues facing the institution include the reorganization of departments, the management of the former 41-bis unit, and the upcoming opening of pavilion D3. The facility has also seen recent tragedies, including three inmate suicides since the beginning of 2026.
