Argentina legal updates: Tapia investigation and femicide trial advance

In Argentina, several high-profile legal proceedings are advancing. Federal Judge Ariel Lijo has authorized 20 investigative measures against Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), regarding allegations of illicit enrichment. The investigation, prompted by a complaint from businessman Guillermo Tofoni, alleges a 1,000% increase in Tapia's assets between 2016 and 2025. Authorities have ordered the lifting of Tapia's banking and tax secrecy to examine his assets, including potential cryptocurrency holdings and income from CONMEBOL and CEAMSE.

Separately, the case involving the femicide of 25-year-old Érika Álvarez has been elevated to oral and public trial in Tucumán. The prosecution has requested life imprisonment for the primary suspect, Felipe Sosa, following the discovery of Álvarez's body in a landfill in January. Two other individuals, Justina Gordillo and Jorge Díaz, face charges of attempted cover-up and could receive six-year sentences.

Additionally, a political trial is scheduled to begin on October 6 against Gastón Salmain, a suspended federal judge from Rosario. Salmain faces accusations of soliciting a bribe to influence a ruling and falsifying his curriculum vitae.
