Claudio Zali faces new investigation for alleged sexual assault

Authorities in Ticino have launched a new criminal investigation against Lega politician and former State Councillor Claudio Zali regarding alleged sexual assaults. The investigation follows statements made by a third party and concerns incidents that reportedly occurred several years ago. Zali, who has already faced investigations for abuse of office and attempted coercion, denies all criminal responsibility.

The case follows the recent death of a 52-year-old woman who had published a secretly recorded conversation with Zali in July. In that recording, the politician allegedly admitted to having beaten a woman. Following the publication, Zali announced his resignation and withdrew from public life.

A preliminary autopsy report regarding the woman, who was found lifeless in Lake Lugano, indicates that drowning is the most likely cause of death and found no evidence of foul play. However, a full toxicological report is still pending to complete the investigation.
