Claus-Dieter Wollitz reflects on 2009 betting scandal and career milestones

Football coach Claus-Dieter ‘Pele’ Wollitz has spoken publicly for the first time about his involvement in the 2009 betting scandal. During that period, while coaching VfL Osnabrück, Wollitz faced questioning from the Bochum public prosecutor's office regarding suspicions that several of his players were involved in match-fixing.

Wollitz described the experience as deeply distressing and felt he was treated as if he were complicit in the manipulation, despite maintaining he had a ‘100 percent clean conscience’. He stated he felt like a victim of the situation and eventually decided to stop cooperating with the investigation due to the psychological pressure. He was never charged in connection with the scandal.

In a separate reflection, Wollitz discussed his early professional relationship with player Leonardo Bittencourt. He recalled being stunned by Bittencourt’s talent during the player's first training session at Energie Cottbus as a 17-year-old, noting that the player's skill level immediately impressed even veteran teammates.
