BUAP postpones pension reform vote and proposes teacher raises
Lilia Cedillo Ramírez, Rector of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), has announced the postponement of a vote regarding reforms to the university's pension and retirement system. Originally scheduled for October 28, the consultation will now be expanded to include all active academic staff, regardless of union affiliation, following requests from the Association of Academic Personnel (ASPABUAP).
The proposed pension reforms include a gradual increase in employee contributions from 4% to 15%. To address labor concerns, the Rector also announced a package of measures for hourly professors, who constitute approximately 70% of the academic staff. These measures include a 10% salary increase via an updated hourly pay scale, the preservation of current bonuses, and expanded opportunities for these educators to hold positions in academic, research, and administrative councils.
The new date for the pension consultation has not yet been determined, as the university must update its registry of participants to comply with legal requirements.
