Clay Cross Active hub promotes preventative community health

Clay Cross Active, a £26.3 million health and wellbeing hub in North East Derbyshire, is implementing a preventative approach to community health. Opened in June 2025, the facility was delivered by Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, for the North East Derbyshire District Council.

Designed to replace the aging Sharley Park Leisure Centre, the hub integrates physical activity with essential support services. It features a 100-station gym, a 25-metre swimming pool, a wellness suite, and community spaces. To address health barriers, the facility hosts on-site services including Citizens Advice North East Derbyshire and the Chesterfield Royal Hospital Community Midwifery Team, which provides antenatal and postnatal care.

The facility has seen rapid engagement since its opening. Membership rose to 3,447 within eight months, a significant increase from the 725 members at the previous centre. Additionally, monthly visits reached 42,562 in February 2026, nearly triple the 14,157 visits recorded at the former site in February 2023.
