Clayface: DC Studios releases first horror film in new cinematic universe

DC Studios has released Clayface, the third installment in its new cinematic universe, marking a significant tonal shift as the studio’s first dedicated horror production. Directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the film utilizes the body horror genre to explore the origin of the Batman villain, Matt Hagen.

The story follows Hagen, a successful Hollywood actor in Gotham City, whose life is destroyed after a violent encounter with a local crime boss, Markos Szabo. Seeking to restore his disfigured face, Hagen undergoes an experimental procedure involving nanotechnology and a clay-like substance. While the treatment restores his appearance, it triggers a terrifying physical metamorphosis, turning him into a shapeshifting monster and driving him toward a violent spiral of vengeance.

Critical reception has been largely positive, with many praising the film’s departure from traditional superhero tropes. Reviewers have noted the high quality of the practical makeup effects and the psychological depth of the character's descent into madness, drawing comparisons to films like 'The Fly' and 'The Substance'.
