Clayton County Jail death ruled a homicide due to medical neglect

The Clayton County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death of 57-year-old detainee Scott Clyde Worthy a homicide. The ruling cites medical neglect and uninhabitable living conditions as the primary causes.

Worthy died on September 6, 2025, at Grady Memorial Hospital after being transferred from the Clayton County Jail. The official cause of death was complications from Streptococcus pyogenes sepsis, which led to septic shock, kidney failure, and respiratory failure. Investigators noted that Worthy suffered from severe bacterial skin infections, including cellulitis and erysipelas.

Paramedics responding to the jail on August 30 reported that Worthy was unable to get up, eat, or use the restroom, and was covered in bodily fluids. Worthy informed responders that cellmates had been stealing his food, preventing him from eating. Jail staff admitted that daily inmate checks had not been conducted properly due to officer incompetence, and medical staff claimed they had not seen Worthy prior to his emergency transfer.
