Clean hydrogen investment exceeds USD 130 billion globally
Global investment in clean hydrogen has surpassed USD 130 billion, according to the Hydrogen Council’s Global Hydrogen Compass 2026 report. The investment supports 6.9 Mtpa of committed capacity across more than 570 projects worldwide, with 90% of these projects currently under construction or already operational.
Global operational capacity has nearly doubled over the past year and is projected to double again next year. The report, co-authored with McKinsey & Company, notes that hydrogen is increasingly viewed as a strategic tool for energy security and economic resilience alongside decarbonization efforts.
Geographically, China is the largest market, representing over half of the world's committed renewable hydrogen capacity and 90% of new operational capacity added since 2025. Europe is the second-largest market, leading in project count and investment growth. The United States leads in low-carbon hydrogen deployment, accounting for approximately 75% of global committed low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia capacity.
