Cleaning and preventing yellow stains on pillows
Yellow stains on pillows are caused by the gradual accumulation of moisture, natural skin oils, cosmetics, and hair products. Beyond being unsightly, these stains can create environments favorable to dust mites and microorganisms, which is a concern for individuals with allergies or respiratory issues.
To remove these marks, a common home remedy involves creating a paste of equal parts baking soda and water. This paste should be applied to the stained areas and left to sit for 20 to 30 minutes before being rinsed with water. For more stubborn, deeply embedded stains, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water in equal proportions can be used, though it is advised to test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure the fabric does not discolor. Hydrogen peroxide should never be mixed with bleach or other chemical cleaners.
Prevention methods include frequent washing of pillowcases and using waterproof or washable pillow protectors to create a barrier against sweat and oils. Additionally, washing the entire pillow once or twice a year, if permitted by the manufacturer, helps prevent dirt from oxidizing and becoming permanent.
