Mehmet Bedel, a 43‑year‑old cleaning employee at Buca Seyfi Demirsoy Education and Research Hospital in İzmir, called emergency physicians Ferdi Akbulut and Hamza Çıldır on 12 July after experiencing stomach pain. While being examined, Bedel lost consciousness and suffered cardiac arrest.
Cardiology and emergency teams performed CPR and defibrillation for about 15 minutes, restoring his heartbeat. An angiography revealed a complete blockage of the main artery feeding the heart’s front wall, which was cleared with a stent during surgery. Bedel spent roughly ten hours intubated in intensive care before his condition improved and he returned to the emergency department. He later told reporters he felt "lucky" and expressed gratitude toward the doctors and nurses who saved his life.
