Cleanwatts and Manie expand shared solar energy access in Portugal
Cleanwatts and the Portuguese platform Manie announced a partnership that will let Manie's customers join more than 70 clean energy communities managed by Cleanwatts. The arrangement is projected to cut electricity bills by around 30% on average. Over 6,000 Manie customers are already eligible to participate, and the number is expected to rise as new projects are launched across the country.
The collaboration follows a pilot programme in Oeiras that allowed about 30 households to join Cleanwatts' communities. Cleanwatts CEO Pedro Antão Alves said the model "democratises access to renewable, cheaper, and more sustainable energy". Manie co‑founder André Pedro highlighted the positive results of the pilot and the benefit of offering customers a simple way to obtain clean, local, and cheaper power.
Manie currently serves more than 80,000 customers and has processed over 130,000 electricity contract switches. Cleanwatts, a pioneer of energy‑community models in Portugal, launched the country's first community in 2021 in Miranda do Douro and continues to invest in, develop, and operate solar installations on client premises, sharing the generated power with nearby consumers and organisations.
