Clear River Games announces ‘Terranigma’ remaster for modern platforms

Clear River Games has announced a remaster of the classic Super Famicom action RPG ‘Terranigma’ (Tenchi Souzou), scheduled for release on multiple platforms including PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The project, which took five years of negotiations with IP holder Square Enix, aims to preserve the original experience while adding quality-of-life improvements such as a quick-selection menu for items and magic.

Character designer Kamui Fujiwara noted that while the ‘Terranigma’ remaster is a success, other titles from the era, such as the ‘46 Billion Year Story’ series, face significant hurdles. Because the original developer, Quintet, no longer exists and the production company has dissolved, obtaining the necessary permissions for modern re-releases is currently impossible.

Clear River Games, a Swedish publisher specializing in retro titles, emphasized a philosophy of preservation. The company works closely with archives to ensure that classic games are brought to new generations without altering the core essence of the original gameplay.
