Clearfield launches fiber‑sensing cables and fault‑managed power for telecom networks
Clearfield, Inc. announced an expanded portfolio that includes temperature, acoustic and strain sensing cables for continuous monitoring of fiber routes and other critical infrastructure. The distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) cables can detect digging, unauthorized access, tower climbs, temperature changes and cable strain across long aerial, buried and conduit pathways, allowing operators to address threats before service outages occur. Clearfield’s Chief Commercial Officer Anis Khemakhem said the technology gives telecom, data‑center and wireless operators better visibility into assets such as miles of fiber, dense data‑center environments and remote edge sites.
The company also introduced its Fault Managed Power (FMP) portfolio, which combines rack‑mounted transmitters with indoor and outdoor receivers to deliver up to 600 kW across four supervised channels and power up to 4 kW over distances of 6,000 ft. Product marketing manager Connor Petit noted that FMP lets service providers run fiber and power through the same conduit, significantly reducing deployment time for remote fixed‑wireless sites. Uptime Institute’s 2026 outage analysis cited that 57 % of respondents reported major outages costing more than $100,000, with one‑in‑five exceeding $1 million, underscoring the financial incentive for early‑detection solutions.
