Clearwater Underwriting appoints Henry MacHale as CEO

Clearwater Underwriting, an Aquiline-backed managing general agent (MGA), has announced the appointment of Henry MacHale as its first Chief Executive Officer. MacHale is expected to assume the newly created role in the second quarter of 2027.

MacHale currently serves as the Chief Underwriting Officer and Head of Strategy for International Markets at Sompo. His previous experience includes senior leadership positions at Aspen, where he served as Portfolio Director for First Party and Specialty lines, CUO for AIUK Insurance, and Group Chief Strategy Officer.

The appointment is part of Clearwater’s strategy to expand beyond its marine insurance roots into a broader range of specialty and niche classes. The firm intends to drive growth through new underwriting capabilities, market expansion, and targeted mergers and acquisitions, while maintaining a focus on sustainable profitability.
