Cleitinho Azevedo elected governor of Minas Gerais in first round

Cleitinho Azevedo (Republicanos) has been elected governor of Minas Gerais in the first round of the 2026 elections. Securing approximately 55% of the valid votes, Azevedo will succeed the current administration and take office on January 1, 2027. To assume the governorship, the current senator will resign his seat in the Senate, which will be filled by his first substitute, Alex Diniz.

During his campaign, Azevedo utilized a budget of approximately R$ 1.1 million, notably opting not to use party funds. His victory follows a race where Patrus Ananias (PT) finished in second place with roughly 26% of the votes, and Flávio Roscoe (PL) placed third.

As governor, Azevedo has expressed intentions to form a technical secretariat and has signaled a desire for political pacification and dialogue with the federal government to renegotiate the state's debt. His platform includes reducing the IPVA tax and improving road infrastructure.
