Clematis and drought‑tolerant plants suggested for summer pergolas and balconies

A scented clematis vine can quickly cover a pergola, providing shade that lowers perceived temperature by 4‑8 °C and adding a sweet fragrance throughout the summer. Recommended varieties include Flammula ‘Sweet Summer Love’, Viticella ‘Etoile Violette’ and other group 3 cultivars that bloom from June to October. Planting advice stresses spacing the vines 1.5‑2 m apart, securing them to the structure, and pruning in late winter.

For balconies exposed to strong sun, five drought‑resistant plants are highlighted: laurier‑rose, olive, lavender, cistus and a selection of succulents such as sedum, echeveria and opuntia.
