Clemson football: Swinney provides injury and player updates

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided updates regarding player availability and performance following the Tigers' recent game against North Carolina.

Starting nickelback Corian Gipson is currently dealing with an injury. Swinney noted that Gipson was “banged up” and “really limited throughout the week” leading up to the North Carolina matchup, which resulted in him playing only two snaps. His status for the upcoming game against Cal remains uncertain as he works toward recovery.

Additionally, Swinney addressed the limited playing time of sophomore running back Chris Johnson Jr. The SMU transfer recorded only two carries for no yards during the win. Swinney explained the decision to bench Johnson, citing a failure to follow the offensive scheme. “He went in, and he bounced it outside on a play that’s supposed to go inside, and so I just wasn’t going to watch it anymore,” Swinney stated, emphasizing the necessity of playing within the system to maintain offensive efficiency.
