Clemson University and BMW unveil solar‑powered Luminetta EV

Clemson University’s automotive engineering graduate team, in partnership with BMW North America, unveiled Deep Orange 17 – a solar‑powered electric vehicle nicknamed Luminetta – at the university’s International Center for Automotive Research on August 6. The prototype is designed for urban commuters, covering a typical 12‑mile (≈22 km) daily trip while generating more energy than it consumes. Weighing just over 1,200 lb (≈550 kg) and covered with more than 1,700 photovoltaic cells, the vehicle can capture enough solar energy to add roughly 31 miles of range during testing.

The Luminetta incorporates lightweight steel, aluminum and carbon‑fiber structures, a regenerative braking system, and a battery‑management system optimized for solar input. Its solar panels, developed with Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, continue to convert light even under shaded conditions. Inside, the two‑seat coupe offers real‑time telemetry, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and other standard driver‑assist features. Program director Greg Mocko highlighted the project as a breakthrough in energy‑positive mobility, while solar‑integration lead Harsh Manghnani noted its potential to inform future EV efficiency improvements.
