Clesrovimab approved in Italy to prevent RSV in newborns

Following approval by the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA), the monoclonal antibody clesrovimab is arriving in Italy to prevent lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in newborns.

Clesrovimab is designed as a long-acting preventive treatment that provides protection for the duration of a typical RSV season through a single, fixed dose that does not depend on the infant's weight. The European Commission has authorized its commercialization across all 27 EU member states, as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

Medical experts note that RSV is a leading cause of childhood hospitalization, often resulting in severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia. The introduction of this treatment is expected to reduce the burden of infection on infants, families, and hospital departments.
