Cleveland Browns coach explains Deshaun Watson selection over Shedeur Sanders

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken has addressed the decision to start Deshaun Watson over Shedeur Sanders for the 2026 NFL season. Speaking on the “The Pivot” podcast, Monken stated that the coaching staff determined Watson’s peak performance potential exceeded that of Sanders, despite Sanders' respectable performance in previous starts.

Monken also detailed a “heart-to-heart” conversation with Watson following a preseason incident where Watson expressed frustration toward local fans who had booed him. Monken encouraged Watson to “let it go” regarding the negativity and past tensions. Following these developments, the Browns have reached a 4-2 record and currently hold first place in the AFC North.
