Cleveland Browns consider contract and trade options for Denzel Ward

Veteran cornerback Denzel Ward, the 29‑year‑old fourth‑overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, is under a five‑year, $100.5 million extension signed in 2022. He has two years remaining on the deal with base salaries of $16.9 million and $17.4 million and no remaining guarantees.

The Browns face roughly $16 million in available cap space, limiting their ability to offer a raise as Ward’s market rank has slipped from the league’s highest‑paid to ninth after an inflating cornerback market. Injuries—including multiple concussions, hamstring strains and knee issues since 2018—add to the uncertainty.

San Francisco 49ers analysts have noted the team’s $71.7 million of cap space and suggested a possible trade in 2026, with the flexibility to rework Ward’s contract if acquired. The 49ers could also release him after a season to save salary.

Ward publicly affirmed his desire to stay in Ohio, stating, “I definitely still want to be here,” after the recent trade of Myles Garrett.
