Cleveland Browns evaluate quarterbacks as Deshaun Watson returns

The Cleveland Browns entered the 2026 offseason with a tight quarterback competition between veteran Deshaun Watson and backup Shedeur Sanders. Watson, who missed the entire 2025 season after a re‑ruptured Achilles and a shoulder surgery, is back for OTAs and minicamp and remains under a fully guaranteed $230 million contract signed in 2022. Sanders, who posted solid performances in the prior season, also earned first‑team reps.

Head coach Todd Monken has not announced a starter, saying he wants to see both quarterbacks in more game‑like situations before making a decision. Analysts note that Watson’s high salary – $40 million guaranteed for the 2025 season – may influence the choice, but performance in practice and preseason will be the decisive factor.
