Cleveland Browns extend quarterback battle between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson into preseason

The Cleveland Browns are keeping their quarterback competition between second‑year quarterback Shedeur Sanders and former star Deshaun Watson open through the preseason. Head coach Todd Monken has said he wants to see both players in more game‑like settings before naming a starter, and the decision may not be made until after the team's three August preseason games against the Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots.

Watson, who has undergone two Achilles repairs after injuries in October 2024 and January 2025, was told by an orthopedic surgeon that the additional repair does not increase his risk of re‑injury. A source noted, “The key, of course, is for the Achilles repair to hold up and for Watson to stay healthy.” Monken also highlighted Watson’s mobility as a valuable trait, saying the quarterback’s ability to move with his feet is “a huge weapon.” Sanders, a former top‑draft prospect, has impressed in OTAs, but the coaching staff has not yet committed to a starter, urging fans to be patient as the evaluation continues.
