Cleveland Browns offensive line struggles amid rebuilding efforts
The Cleveland Browns are facing significant offensive challenges due to a massive overhaul of their offensive line. After deciding to rebuild the unit following the retirement of All-Pro guard Joel Bitonio and various roster changes, the team is navigating the difficulties of starting five new players across the line.
Through five games, the Browns' offensive struggles have been linked to the line's inability to protect quarterback Deshaun Watson or create running lanes, leaving the team's rushing attack ranked 21st. In a recent 17-12 loss to the New York Jets, Watson was sacked eight times.
Coach Todd Monken noted that while the unit saw progress in previous weeks, communication and protection slipped during recent rainy conditions. The rebuilding process has been further complicated by injuries, including a season-long back injury to right guard Teven Jenkins, which has required rookies like Austin Barber to step into starting roles.
